Casey Jurgens
Team Leader Collections Volunteers
Casey Jurgens is responsible for managing and supervising the Collections volunteer program, with assistance from the Technical Officer (Herbarium). The Collections Volunteer program is an ever-growing group of plant-passionate individuals who physically curate specimens for the State Botanical Collection, including vascular flora, algae, bryophytes, fungi and lichen.
Casey investigates, sources, and implements new collections care recommendations and documents current specimen preparation techniques. She has extensive knowledge of herbarium specimen best practice and is responsible for training staff and volunteers to meet specimen standards.
Physical handling is a major component of specimen mounting; Casey’s more recent work has involved implementing safe handling procedures for material that was historically treated with heavy metal biocides. This has included orchestrating mass testing of ambient mercury vapour within the collections and utilising UV screening in day-to-day practice.
